I bought a 1960's 3800 from a market stall and managed to get it going with a thorough cleaning of plug, carby, rewiring of ignition and some fuel. It's missing a few bits, brakes are lousy, the tyres are cracked and the exhaust fell off on the first day but all up I covered about 250km of Amsterdam riding until yesterday when it died (4 times then finally). The symptoms were rough running, intermittent lack of power and a noise like the exhaust had fallen off again (only it hadn't). Prior to that I'd had a little trouble starting with a grating sound occurring. It did get quite hot before it died but only died completely once it cooled down. Now I've cleaned everything, made sure there is spark and fuel and it appears to have some compression but no go. The only thing I found was a cracked rubber washer under the air filter hood. It almost feels like it's kicking over if I pedal like crazy.

Any ideas ? I think it may be compression but I have no manual and no experience of 2-strokes. Can it just go like that ?

Any service place in Amsterdam ? I'm not sure I have the tools for a big job.

thanks

The "dead" you describe make me think of a failed
sealing Cylinder head seal or crankcase seal, allowing air to escape or to be sucked in.
When air is sucked in the engine runs to lean causing overheating and jamming of the piston in the cylinder liner.
You need a thorough check-up.

Thanks Joan. The bike was running lean before it 'expired' so that may be the cause. Can you advise a good service agent in Amsterdam who could do the repairs ? All the agents I can find seem to be based around Eindhoven.

hi allan,
I live in Katwijk, thats near Leiden. Say about 10-15 minutes on a solex . If you would like some help, i can explain some things about your solex at your house.
You can mail me at tisietarres@hotmail.com (msn messenger too) for making an appointment or something.
Van diest live's near Leiden too, in Warmond. You can mail him too, look in his "profiel".

Re: Solex Service Amsterdam.

I think it is Heemstedestraat No. 40 along the no.2 tram route.
